The next morning, Mal and I stood against the wall in Jonelleâs room, watching as she argued with Audrey and Stony.
âI am perfectly fine, Mom,â Jonelle insisted. âIâve lived alone for years and Iâll be fine by myself now.â
âJonelle Leeanne Watson, I am your mother and I will stay with you until Iâm satisfied that youâre going to be fine.â
âThe doctor said Iâm fine!â Jonelle cried. âHe was just here and so were you. You heard him yourself.â
Audrey Watson crossed her arms over her chest.
Jonelle looked to me, her expression pleading but I just shrugged. I knew better than to go head-to-head with Audrey Watson when sheâd dug in her heels.
âIâll go with you,â Stony offered. âMake sure you both have everything you need.â
Audrey smiled sweetly at him. âWhy, thank you, Stony. I appreciate the help. Do you think you could rustle up some duct tape for me before we leave the hospital?â
Mal made a choking noise and started coughing as he rushed from the room, likely to cover up the fact that he was laughing. Or possibly to escape any imminent bloodshed.
âGod, Mom,â Jonelle groaned, plopping her butt on the bed. She was fully dressed and ready to go, just waiting on the paperwork to sign before she could leave.
âIâm worried about you, baby,â Audrey said, her voice soft and tremulous. âYou didnât see yourself last night. They brought you in and you were so pale and still. If it hadnât been for the monitors, I wouldnât have been able to tell you were breathing.â
Jonelle stopped arguing then.
Fifteen minutes later, Stony, Jonelle, and Audrey were piled in Audreyâs white Camaro and headed off to Jonelleâs little house as Mal and I waved from the parking lot.
âThink Stony will be all right?â I asked Mal as we climbed into my car.
âYeah. The doctor said heâs back to normal.â
âI meant at Jonelleâs,â I explained.
Mal smiled. âDefinitely. He told me heâs staying with her until all this is over.â
I stared at him with wide eyes. âReally? Jonelle agreed to this?â
Giving me a side-long look, Mal said, âNot exactly. But I know I would feel the same way if you had just been drugged. I wouldnât want you to leave my sight.â
I didnât point out that he had already decided I wasnât supposed to be alone until the situation with the dark entity was resolved.
âCarissa will be here soon, we should probably get back to the house,â Mal suggested.
I realized I knew nothing about the woman who was flying in from Atlanta to help me. âHave you known her long?â I asked him.
âSheâs been a close friend of my family for almost ten years,â he answered. âSheâs worked with us a few times when weâve filmed in Georgia and other nearby areas.â
His explanation did nothing to assuage my curiosity. âWhatâs she like?â
He shrugged. âSmart, reserved, and very talented. Sheâs the only medium Iâve met who can even come close to matching your abilities.â
âHow old is she?â I wondered aloud.
âTwo or three years older than you, Iâd say.
